This is one of the most important cities of ancient Azania (it was numbered about 60,000 inhabitants in its flourishing time) and because it is built on a plain, like other Arcadian cities and not in a hill with a fort, was surrounded by strong protecting walls. These today are not preserved in good condition, because the material was used in the post-Byzantine and modern times for the construction of houses of the surrounding settlements. The wall was reinforced by semicircular towers and was built during the Hellenistic period. The latest excavations have revealed an important part of the fortifications and towers and part of the ancient theater which is not well preserved. In front of the theater, in an appropriate place, each year are held important theatrical performances because of the conservation status of the ancient theater that does not allow the use of. According to tradition, the city took its name from the Kleitora, son of Azana, fifth king of Azania who founded and populated city. According Pausanias it was far 60 stadiums from the source of Aroanios and close to the city flowed a river named Kleitor. In the city there were sanctuaries of Demeter Eilithia, of Asclepius and the Dioscuri (outside the city). Thirty stadiums from Kleitora there was the shrine of Korea Athena statue and every year in her honor the “corasia” were held. Kleitora had copper mines that were supporting its economy and was the first Arcadian city to mint coins. Kleitora took part in the foundation of the Megalopolis in 369BC with Kleolaos and Akrifios. It was  member of the Achaean League and participated in all the military conflicts of the alliance. The 395AD was destroyed by Alarichos. Kleiroras had three Olympic medalists.  Alcetos in the 99th Olympiad in 384 BC, Kritodamos in the 101st Olympiad in 376 BC and Kleomantis in  the 111th Olympiad.
